Dear Friends,
I am Father Barnabas serving at Saint Bernard Parish in Bella Vista, Arkansas.; belonging to the Indian Missionary Society. IMS is a missionary religious community/Order working in India. Reverend Father Gaspar A. Pinto founded the IMS/Indian Missionary Society on November 3rd, 1941 in Varanasi, part of northern India. The specific purpose of the IMS is PIONEERING EVANGELIZATION, namely we take up a non-Christian area develop and establish a Catholic community. The Indian Missionary Society is presently working in 89 centers and parishes spread in 43 dioceses.
The IMS has 240 priests and 150 seminarians at different stages of their training. You will be happy to know that this year the IMS had 5 ordinations to priesthood and they are already assigned to various places.
We are engaged in various activities, projects and programs in the parishes and missions. They include directly preaching the Word of God, Evangelization projects, and celebration Mass in villages and with families. Formal primary and secondary education in local languages, sponsoring children in their education, empowerment of women, and training of seminarians. Medical camps and assistance, social and developmental projects and programs, safe drinking water hand pumps and wells for agricultural irrigation purposes. We currently have one HIV/AIDS rehabilitation center for 100 children and 45 adults, one center for children who are mentally challenged, one center for adults who are mentally challenged, and another center for hearing impaired children.
IMS priests in collaboration with others are undertaking the following activities and projects in the different parishes and mission centers to counter act and minimize the problems they are facing in their lives both personally and socially so as to bring about a transformation and change in persons, families, groups, and society:
1. Building Prayer Halls and Village Chapels
2. Celebration of family and village Masses, faith formations, evangelization programs, retreats for men, women, youth & children, distribution of bibles, etc to bring about a change and transformation from faith and spiritual perspective.
3. Formal education for the children by establishing schools both at the parish centers and in the villages in the local local languages and trying to educate children in English so as to get better job opportunities for them.
4. Medical camps to identify and treat the people and their illnesses in rural areas; distribution of medicines to the poor people.
5. Drilling and installing safe drinking water hand-pumps in the villages.
6. Sponsoring children in their education who will not be able to study otherwise both in the local languages and English.
7. Training of seminarians to priesthood.
8. Educate a Girl & Save a Family; Financially support the education of girls through high school and then sponsor them to study job-oriented programs like nursing, professional courses, hospitality, hotel management, secretarial courses. etc so that they find a job which will ensure financial stability to meet the basic needs for their families before and after marriage.
I stand before you representing the people the Indian Missionary Society Priests are working with and serving so we can become PARTNERS WORKING TOGETHER to bring about a transformation, and a better future for the people of India. Especially for the children, women, and tribal (rural poor). This partnership and collaboration can be achieved through the following ways:
1. Praying for the priests of the IMS, its activities and projects and the people we are serving.
2. Sponsoring one or more children in their education; to sponsor a child it is only $30 per month and annually it's $360.
3. Sponsoring or Co-Sponsoring a girl to complete job-oriented course: for nursing it will cost about $9000 for four years, for other courses about $4000 for two years.
4. Sponsoring fully or Co-sponsoring one or more seminarians in their study to priesthood; it takes only $2000 per year to meet all the expenses for a year.
5. Sponsoring fully or Co-sponsoring to drill and install a hand pump for safe drinking water which costs about $2000.
6. Introducing the IMS and its activities to your children, relatives, friends, neighbors.
7. By Sparing on dollar every day or setting aside the change that you have at the end of the day in a bowl and sending it over the IMS for its needs and activities from time to time through your parish.
In gratitude to you and our partners the Indian Missionary Society does the following:
1. Praying for the IMS benefactors, sponsors, and friends every day after lunch and dinner.
2. 150 IMS Priests celebrate on Mass each on Christmas and Easter for the intentions of benefactors, friends, and sponsors of Indian Missionary Society.
3. When we come to know about the death of a benefactor, friend, or sponsor. Five Masses are celebrated by an IMS priest for him/her and the family.
4. Reports and pictures are forwarded to your parish on specifically sponsored projects and activities.
So let us become partners and collaborators in building up the kingdom of God, which was inaugurated by Jesus and win India for Christ. God bless you, your families, and America!
